Year-end Label Celebration at the Pinhook!

It’s time to thank the fans and the bands for all they mean to the music scene, and 307 Knox Records has the party covered. Friday, December 16^th 2011 come out and about to The Pinhook for this year-end celebration!

From 8pm-until, get in for free and drink, jive and jam with the locals to all the tunes that make you dance- all ages welcome! Mel Thomas, 307 Knox owner and operator, will be dustin' off her skills and Djing the night away- also featuring super-fresh mix tapes from Scantron (Lynn Casper) of Homoground.

307 Knox Records came to light as a project to help local artists get their music out and has been a musical force since 2004. Forty releases later, they have grown into an indigenous institution, actively involved in fundraisers, festivals, queer community events and Girls Rock NC.

The 307 Knox mission is to keep music accessible to all audiences, and this continues to motivate the label, which has appeared in Pitchfork, Magnet, Paste, Curve, Bust and Nylon. The label has also attracted talent from outside of the Triangle, such as Katastrophe, Trophy Wife and Future Islands.

Durham, NC- The Pinhook is celebrating their three year anniversary and teaming up with 307 Knox Records to bring the noise with national touring act MEN on November 3^rd, 2011.

Brooklyn-based MEN is JD Samson (Le Tigre), Michael O' Neill (Princess, Ladybug Transistor) and Tami Hart (MKNG FRNDZ)- and they've come all the way to Durham to rock us live and radical. The group speaks to current issues and lays lyrical content over inspired and unexpected grooves for a vibrant, exciting stage-show.

Only $8 (doors at 9) gets you into the hippest venue in town and an opening performance from Brooklyn electro-dance band Tayisha Busay at 10, culminating in a house-pounding performance from MEN at 11.

307 Knox Records is a local studio with an impressive label membership and an involved hand. Melissa Thomas, owner and resident dream-weaver, is thrilled to have MEN coming to town and feels that this is going to be “the show this November- nothing quite like this has come through town for a while, and The Pinhook is the perfect venue.”

8 Inch Betsy Nears the Finish Line!

In case you haven't heard, 8 Inch Betsy is competing for a spot at SXSW in the PopUp Music competition from PopChips + SPIN magazine. These Chicago sisters are working hard to make it into the top 4 for their city in order to put on a PopUp show of their own and move on up!

The kind folks over at Homoground posted a 307 Knox summer mix tape.

Go check it out and make sure you have a glass of hand-shaken lemonade.

About my mix tape:

When I think of summer I always think of Kimya Dawson and dance music. Not sure why. It seems to make a great mix. My favorite Kimya song is “I will never forget”.

Katastrophe’s song “Big Deal” is just perfect for hot summer dance nights or road trips. Another great road trip song is the Juan Huevos song “Only Pony Unicorn”. Both of these songs were on a mixtape we put out called “Rainbows and Unicorns” in 2009.

My new crushes include Alison Weiss and The All-Girls Boys Choir. Alison is hands down one of the hardest working, touring and accessible artists I have come across in a while. Love following her next move. The All-Girls Boys Choir played in Chapel Hill with another all-time favorite, The Moaners, last month.

Midtown Dickens and Des Ark have Durham roots and I love Durham in the summer. It was hard for me to select only on Midtown Dickens song so I picked my two favorites. “A.M. Dial” references a journey back to Durham and the song appeared on a compilation I worked on called Rockin’ The Blocks for a Durham organization called DDI. Birds and Arrows just released We’re Gonna Run this past April on 307 Knox and I am hoping they will continue to gather the dedicated fan base they have built so far. Give them a listen!

Rounding out my summer mix tape - a little kick in the gut - I included Trophy Wife and 8 Inch Betsy. Trophy Wife is a duo which consists of two stellar ass kicking women from Philly (Katy and Diane). They just came back from Europe. We put out Patience Fury last July and what a year it has been from them. Please stay on the look out to see when they are coming to your city. 8 Inch Betsy hails from Chicago and Durham. Their new record The Mean Days will be out on 307 Knox records this Fall. ”Doomed” is a great summer song and if you dig it check it out on Rock Band Network and wow your friends with your mad gaming skills.

Hi Folks,

We are going to push the release date of The Means Days back a bit.

I know, I know. Please don’t toss anything our way. This just gives the label the time they need for press, radio and distribution. Trust us when we say so worth the wait!!!

We all met over the weekend and decided that 307 Knox Records will still leak tracks this summer. The label is committed to getting the record out in a digital format first and will follow that with CD and maybe even a limited run of vinyl.

Look out for a new release date.

Well hello out there! It's been awhile since we've posted (I think I just saw a tumble weed rolling around on the blog), but we're back in the saddle with some exciting news.

It might only be Wednesday, but 307 Knox has rounded up some Saturday night plans for you – yeah, you’re welcome.

Our own Birds & Arrows has just added a show at the Saxapahaw River Mill in Saxapahaw, NC. The town’s name might be hard to say (or impossible, whatever), but getting there is a breeze and it’s our very favorite price of free. Bring a few bucks for the tip jar, a picnic blanket so you can spread out some farmer’s market goodies, and a posse of your friends and you’re set for the perfect summer evening with some perfect summer tunes.

So here are the details: the set’s from 6-8 p.m. at the Saxapahaw River Mill (1616 Jordan Dr., Saxapahaw, NC) this Saturday, June 18th. It won’t cost you anything except a little bit of gas money and a few bucks for the band if you’re feeling generous, so head on out and spend some time on the lawn in Chatham County! We hope to see you there.

P.S. Andrea, 1/3 of Birds & Arrows, will be celebrating a birthday on the night of the show, so bust out the sparklers and cake! We imagine the set will be filled with a little extra birthday something-something.

The new LP features denser, more lush string-meets-folk arrangements and songs that rise to the heights of romance's most jubilant moments while allowing the slashes of its painful angles to push through as well. The CD release show will also feature the ever-satisfying riffs of Gray Young and the enlivening modern Americana of Justin Robinson and the Mary Annettes. The 9 p.m. show costs $8.

Gray Young plays tonight, and Birds and Arrows and Midtown Dickens play on Friday. The festival line-up is chock full of great bands from myriad genres. Humble Tripe bring their pleasing folk sound to three cities across the Northeast this weekend. Thursday, they hit the 263 Gallery in Cambridge, MA. Friday they'll be in Amherst, MA at Hampshire College, joining a fellow Knox artist, the catchy rapper Katastrophe, as well as the Athens Boys Choir. And Saturday, they'll be in Brooklyn at the 68 Jay Street Bar. Their melodies are sweet as their words are poetic, so if you're in the area of these shows make sure to get out.

Two Knox artists will take part in N.C. State's Earth Day Concert in Raleigh this Friday. Arena-riff-wielding trio Gray Young and spacey rock group North Elementary will play as part of the celebration, which will take place at the school's Harris Field. Check out the schedule for the event here.

Mr. Alex Nathan would be celebrating his 35th birthday on 3/22. He was 33 when he passed on 5/11/2009.

I am not sure I had ever cried so hard as I did when I spoke to Cam, Alex’s mother, after a returning from a trip to DC where Alex got to spend some quality time with Kimya. We went up to DC to see her play the Black Cat. She was gracious as ever and put Alex at ease. She invited him to sing with her that night. I know he was freaking out like crazy as we watched her from stage left. He was grabbing my arm so hard he left marks. When she called him up to the stage I assisted him up the stairs, stepped back and started to immediately tear up. This was something Alex had only dreamed of and joked about. Well he was about to sing with Kimya in front of 400+ people. Sing his favorite song, "Eleventeen," with his favorite singer.

There is footage out there of Alex singing with Kimya.

When we returned to NC, and I talked to Cam, it was that conversation that really drove it home for me how much he had suffered. How sick he really was. I knew he was sick and understood that, but in this one conversation it was very clear. I hung the phone up with her and kneeled down on the kitchen floor holding on to the edge of the sink crying so hard I thought my head was going to burst.

There were so many moments in DC, prior to our trip and post our trip, where I wanted to protect Alex from what he was going through. We talked about what was going to happen as he got sicker, and my answer was always in a positive pitch. Sometimes I could not stand to hear my words knowing I was sadder or more angry than I was letting on.

Alex called me when he was going home to start the process of Hospice. I was so strong throughout the conversation – I surprised myself until I hung up and lost it again. Tears and tears and tears. I called Kimya to let her know he was going home for Hospice. We talked about every day that week, and as the week was coming to an end, I asked Alex again what I could do for him. Was there anything he wanted? Needed? His very loving mom, two sisters, brother, two brother-in-laws, nephew and two nieces were there with him not leaving his side. He had the care he needed, a comfortable home with his playlist playing in the background, and a tremendous amount of unconditional love. What else could we do? As the week came to a close, he had a request. He requested a visit from his new friend Kimya. Did I think I could talk to her about coming to see him?

Kimya and I talked a few times trying to figure out a plan. The plan was as follows:

Fly out of Olympia Friday landing in Charlotte at sunrise on Saturday.

Pick Kimya up in Charlotte at sunrise on Saturday.

Drive to Durham.

Rest and go see Alex.

Fly out of Durham on Sunday (Mother’s Day) to Olympia.

Few days later leave for Europe.

We spent a good portion of Saturday at Alex’s side. He was weak but was very aware that she was there he was even singing when he could. When Kimya was not singing to him, they were talking. As we all took turns holding each other up with smiles, hugs and tears. As it got a bit later in the evening, we excused ourselves to head back to Durham. Exhausted but very wide-eyed, we returned to my home. There we discussed our thoughts about the day.

Sunday morning Kimya decided to change her flight to leave Monday. This was a gift to Alex and to all of us. We went to see Alex for a second day and more songs and conversation was shared. That morning before we left my home, Kimya made Alex a t-shirt with ponies on it.

Our visit seemed super short, but I think about it now and realize I knew it was most likely going to be the last time I saw Alex. The last time I was going to call him Homie, tell him I loved him, or see Kimya singing with him. When we were leaving, we each had a moment to say good-bye. I am not even sure what I said, it was so hard to get the words out and I knew the tears were not stopping. I can only remember saying I love you.

The next morning I was driving Kimya to the airport. It was a very early flight as we were entering the garage parking lot gates, Cam called. She said Alex had passed. It was hazy after that. I know I got Kimya on her plane, I know I got home from the airport, but I don’t remember too much else. However I did know that in the last hours of his short, vibrant, artistic life he was cherished.

Hitch your wagon to a star, Homie.

In the fall of 2009, Kimya called me in Philly to sing me a song she just wrote called “Walk Like Thunder.” It took every fiber I had to stay seated in the chair and not roll up in a ball on the floor. She was telling me her story woven with loss, change and strength. Amazing and sad. Today she has posted the song here: Walk Like Thunder

Fetching Durham folk quintet Midtown Dickens take their intricately rough songs on the road this weekend, stopping off at the AllWays Lounge in New Orleans tonight before heading onto dates in Austin for South By Southwest. More information on the band’s itinerary can be found here.

Humble Tripe have three gigs on the road this week. The emotionally and melodically impactful folk group play the dates in the opening slot for Athens Boys Choir. They’ll be in Athens at Flicker on Friday, in Asheville at Smokey's on Saturday and in Atlanta at My Sister's Room on Sunday. More information on the shows can be found here.

Future Islands continue a run of dates, bringing their gritty dance rock to Purchase College in New York on Thursday before hitting Philadelphia this Friday. You can find the band's full touring schedule on their website.

Saturday two bands that have worked with Knox help celebrate one of Durham's greatest musical assets. Midtown Dickens and Cantwell, Gomez and Jordan play at the town's Fullsteam Brewery as part of the five-year anniversary party for Bull City Records. Operated by Chaz Martenstein, the record store is a treasure run by a man who always has a recommendation, no matter what your taste in music. The show gets going at 7 p.m. and costs $10.

Gray Young takes their expansive rock sound on the road this week with a few shows along the Southeast. Saturday they hit the Highland Ballroom in Atalanta. Sunday they'll be in Charlotte at Snug Harbor. Monday they'll finish off the trip at Savannah's Wormhole before returning to Raleigh for a Tuesday night at Kings Barcade.

Interview: Tom Maxwell of The Universal

Tom Maxwell is already well-known to many people in North Carolina's Triangle. He played in the legendary outfit Squirrel Nut Zippers, one of the bands that put the area on the national indie rock map in the '90s. Nowadays Maxwell has a new project. The Universal is an online show that brings bands into the studio for a live session and a chat. On Feb. 11, Maxwell takes his show out of the studio, taping Birds and Arrows at Carrboro's Arts Center. The band will play its entire new album months before it comes out, and Maxwell will talk to them about it as well. 307 Knox caught up with Maxwell to talk with him about his show and the upcoming outing.

307 Knox: Tell me about your show. How did you come up with the idea?

Tom Maxwell: I guess it was just an idea that to a long time to incubate. It was all sort of there. I was aware of like John Peel's work with the BBC and also the great BBC Sessions recordings that were made available of British Invasion bands I really like. The quality was always really high. When I was in the Squirrel Nut Zippers we would go out and play radio shows and the production values were never as good These were really cool shows, but they were engineered by broadcast engineers. They didn't have a lot of life to them.

It occurred to me that maybe I could continue working in the same sort of vein that those BBC guys did and bring musical groups in and record them live in a studio setting, record them really well but capture a live performance.

307 Knox: Why did you decide to fill that void yourself?

TM: I just didn't think that there were a lot of broadcast entities out there that were doing it. I'm sure there are some. I guess the thing that I found the most compelling about is that we could be documentarians. We could document what's going on in a way that would have a great amount of artistic as well as historical value. Because when you go and see a live performance, it's done, it's gone. There's so much great stuff in our back yard in terms of local bands and in terms of touring acts that come through this area, and I thought there's no reason for us not to be sort of parochial about this and say, 'This is a snapshot of what's going on culturally in our area.' I think it's something to be really proud of.

307 Knox: When you interview Birds and Arrows, what are most intrigued to find out?

TM: I don't know. My first instinct is, how does it work as a couple? This is probably well trodden territory. I guess the thing on an abstract level that I want to find out about them is what I want to find about anyone with whom I come into contact, whether it's in a bar or in the studio, which is, 'What makes you tick? What makes your eyes light up?' It doesn't have to be artists that you like or records that you listened to as a kid or what you're listening to now. It can be anything, art or whatever is capturing someone's imagination at the time.

What's cool about this is it is a snap shot like any recording. It has the added benefit of being live. When people look back on this they'll know not only what came before but what came after. It's never my job to contextualize. But I do what to give as much insight as possible. I want to gain as much insight as possible and have that revealed.

Spacey, grunge-y and, most importantly, catchy, the band will hit Winston Salem, NC and Atlanta. Friday they hit Krankies Coffee in Winston. That show starts at 8 p.m. and costs $6. Saturday night they hit The Music Room in Atlanta. That show gets going at 10 p.m.

If you've yet to see North Elementary, definitely try to make it out. Their large rock sound is backed by rousing choruses and chugging riffs. It's tons of fun.

Really, what else is there to say at the end of such a busy, wonderful, jam-packed year? We're guessing you feel the same way.

Looking back at 2010, 307 Knox wants to say thanks to all of the people who made this year so special for us. We're so grateful for the artists we represent, the folks who come out to see them play, and the people behind the scenes making everything work.

Some of this year's highlights — "Knox with an X," our Hopscotch day party featuring Tea and Tempests, Brett Harris, Phil Cook and his Feat, Humble Tripe, Midtown Dickens, Birds & Arrows, Gray Young and North Elementary; the numerous releases we've helped put out this year, such as Gray Young's Staysail, Trophy Wife's Patience Fury, North Elementary's Southern Rescue Trails, Jews and Catholics' Who Are We Think We Are?, Humble Tripe's Counting Stars, and Birds & Arrows' and Billy Sugarfix's "Pride of Lions" split 7". Also, we managed to get Midtown Dickens' "Oh Yell" out on some sweet sky-blue vinyl and release a second run of Future Island's "Wave Like Home" on a bubble gum pink platter. Another amazing Troika Music Festival.

It makes us tired just reading that list. But you know what else we feel? Accomplished, thankful, happy, proud, and really damn lucky to live in a vibrant scene filled with so many incredible artists.

So here's to all the folks who've made this year such a great one. Cheers to another busy and wonderful 2011! Happy Birthday Dad!

Interview: Amy Davis of Slippin' Sliders talks Knox/Dogstar party!

In an area becoming more and more known for food-truck excess, Raleigh's Slippin Sliders stands apart. Taking the concept of mini-burgers and slathering them with combinations such as Mandarin oranges, avocodo, rice noodles and Teriyaki sauce (aka the Teriyaki Goddess), the crew have one of the most unique mobile menus in the Triangle. Friday, the truck will be on hand to serve food to guests of 307 Knox and Dogstar Tattoo's "Machines and Vinyl" party at Durham's Pinhook. We caught up with co-owner and chef Amy Davis to talk about her sliders.

307 Knox: When did you start and why?

Amy Davis: The idea came about over the end of the summer between (co-owner) Josie Shrum and I, and we were both talking about how much we wanted to start our own restaurant. We just decided that a food truck would be a nice first step because of the economy and all the start up costs. I guess our start-up weekend was Halloween weekend. That’s when we officially launched.

Knox: Talk to me about the development of the menu?

AD: The development of the menu, I pretty much did it all myself, but we wanted to leave it open to where we could always come up with new things. The reason we went with sliders is because she always talked about how she wanted to open up a White Castle here in Raleigh, and I always talked about how I wanted to open up an In-N-Out Burger. So we kind of merged our ideas. The other reason I went with sliders is it’s kind of like tapas in its own way. It’s kind of more fun, instead of just ordering one thing, to mix and match several things to make up your meal. I find it more interesting.

Knox: With White Castle and In-N-Out Burger as influences, how did you end up with so many non-beef selections on your menu?

AD: Basically just for people to have that option because there are a lot of vegetarians in the Triangle. There are a lot of people who don’t eat beef or pork. We wanted to have something to offer everybody. As a chef, it’s a lot more fun to have all these creative options, where you’re not limited to just one thing. I wanted to do something different than the other food trucks in the area. I didn’t want to be directly compete with Only Burger for example.

Knox: What’s your favorite selection on your menu and why?

AD: My personal favorite is the Diablo. That has pepper jack, ranch, Texas Pete and caramelized jalapenos and onions. I really like spicy food, and the jalapenos make it really, really flavorful.

Knox: What made you want to jump on board with this party?

AD: Durham is a really great place to have a food truck. When we went out for the Rock & Shop Market. We weren’t even expecting what happened. We just didn’t even realize it was going to be that many people coming up to our truck at once. We wanted to give Durham another chance, to redeem ourselves. We were understaffed and not prepared for that many people. We literally had 75 people line-up and order one-by-one, back-to-back. It took us about an hour to catch up with everybody, so we wanted to come out to Durham again more prepared.

Trophy Wife to play two dates with Universal Order of Armageddon!

On Jan. 22 and 23 Trophy Wife will join legendary hardcore band Universal Order of Armageddon for two shows in Brooklyn and Philadelphia respectively.

Baltimore's UOA was a powerful force in American hardcore from 1992 to 1994. The band's furious, chaotic sound garnered a devoted following, and, though they were only active for two years, the band released several respected albums and singles on labels such as Kill Rock Stars and Gravity. The band reunited this summer for a show in Baltimore and New York City and has scheduled four dates in the Northeast for January.

Trophy Wife, a ferocious rock duo that hails from Philadelphia, will play the dates in support of its recent 307 Knox album Patience Fury. Full dates for both bands are below.

On Friday, Dec. 17 Durham's Dogstar Tattoo and 307 Knox records invite you to a year-end bash at The Pinhook.

The free "Machines and Vinyl" party will feature music from Pinhook regular DJ Dude Femme, as well as beer from Fullsteam Brewery and raffles for prizes, including 307 Knox vinyl, Fullsteam gear and gifts from Dogstar. Proceeds will benefit the Durham Rescue Mission. Raleigh's new Slippi' Sliders, a gourmet food-truck specializing in mini-burgers, will be on hand to sell food to hungry guests.

DTH Diversions semi-annual blowout tomorrow!

Though we carry no affiliation with this event, 307 Knox heartily endorses Dive Party IX, which features Spider Bags, Bellafea and Whatever Brains. The free show takes place tomorrow at Chapel Hill's Local 506. Music starts at 9:30 p.m.

Diversions, the weekly arts and entertainment section of The Daily Tar Heel, has been putting on a free show of well-curated local music once a semester for four years now. Current editor Linnie Greene (who, for disclosure's sake, works part time here at Knox) has outdone herself in assembling one of the event's best bills to date.

Here's what the Independent Weekly's Grayson Currin had to say about the show:
"This end-of-semester showcase presented by the Daily Tar Heel's Diversions section offers a master's class for the kids in leading a band. Spider Bags' frontman Dan McGee is all energy and agitation, twisting his wiry frame through tough-but-sweet, hooky-but-thorny garage rock blasts. He swears and slurs; you just sing. Stand close enough to Whatever Brains' Rich Ivey, and expect a stream of spit, sweat and snot as he barks his band's warped art punk anthems. Some of this weekend's highlights: Chatham County Line's three-part harmonies around a single microphone at Motorco, Mount Moriah's intense and gorgeous jams at Fullsteam, Dex Romweber crooning like the ghost of Elvis Presley and/or Johnny Cash at 618 Foster St. It's a little bit like the day after Christmas.

And plenty of 307 Knox artists killed it too: Birds & Arrows, North Elementary, Gray Young and lots of other friends!

But fret not, because even if you're feeling the post-Troika blues, there are some great shows coming up to soothe your pain. Gray Young, Jews & Catholics and North Elementary have a gig on Friday, Nov. 19 at The Pinhook and Birds & Arrows play the Post Turkey Day Jam at Cat's Cradle the next Friday (Nov. 26).

We'll see you at both of those sweet shows, and as they say in the movies — we'll always have Troika.

DURHAM -- Friday morning at Triangle Brewing Company, Rick Tufts, Andy Miller and Luke Studer -- who are, respectively, the co-owners and sole employee of the company -- were gearing up for a long weekend. A visitor to the company's brewing facility on Pearl Street could see the remnants of a wood crate that had recently housed the brewery's new canning machine.

Tufts, Miller, Studer and an assistant were using a forklift and pallet jacks to move the machine into their space. This weekend, they were planning to put the first samples of their locally produced craft brew into cans -- at the rate of 70 cases an hour, Tufts said. The assembly line will be the first automated canning operation for a craft brewer in North Carolina, he said.

Aficionados of craft beer are probably less concerned with that first fact than they are with another first. For three years, Triangle Brewing Company has been exclusively an on-tap beer. Satisfaction Restaurant and Bar, Broad Street Cafe and Watts Grocery are among the bars and restaurants that carry the company's beers. The company also makes its beer available at CD release parties and other local music events. They recently were on hand for a release party put on by Durham-based 307 Knox Records.

"Pride of Lions," the contribution of Chapel Hill sweethearts Pete and Andrea Connolly of Birds and Arrows to this hand-sewn 7-inch package, follows the elegant, elemental folk path that defined the duo's full-length debut, Starmaker. But where that record's tracks tended toward intimate portraiture, this song flirts with idiosyncratic nonsense. The lyrics are a collage of random imagery both affecting and obtuse. The listener may never filch the logic between the "pride of lions" and washing "clothes in an unbalanced washing machine," but when hearing these images sung in fragile, interlocked harmony against the meandering melody of this track, it really doesn't matter.

Meanwhile, "Risk Big," Billy Sugarfix's first release with his new band, Carousel, is a '50s nerd-chic pop gem. Sweet and uncharacteristically straightforward, Sugarfix trades antics for a precise arrangement and lyrics that bend toward cliché ("rock and a hard place," "one foot in, one foot out," "silver lining"). Saving it all from been-there-sung-that dread is Sugarfix's operatic vibrato, a chorus of las, boy/ girl trade-offs and undercurrents of oboe. Thankfully, Carousel ties a Buddy Holly bow tie on what sounds at times like a middle schooler's woebegone journal entry. For Sugarfix, the full-band risk works.

Just when you thought academics were only good for term papers and exams, think again.

UNC's Southern Cultures magazine, a publication from the Center for the Study of the American South, has announced a free compilation of Southern tunes that will accompany its latest issue. Sure, it looks like there are the requisite crackly, back porch tracks — but consider us pleasantly surprised that Durham's Megafaun and Greensboro's Filthy Bird were included!

If the two songs from some of our local favorites are any indication, UNC's Center for the Study of the American South knows its stuff, so order a copy of the latest issue before the comps run out!

Here's to kudzu, hundred degree heat, and all the things that inspire such brilliant Southern jams!

1. Gray Young will be playing at the This Thing We Did Festival in Sanford, NC this Saturday at 4 pm.

As the festival season draws to a close, this may be your last chance to catch some sick local acts in wide open spaces. Bring on the heat (and be sure to pack some Locopops for good measure... Mojito flavor is particularly nice).

2. There's been a change in the line-up for tonite's Jews & Catholics show at the Nightlight — while the Dirty Little Heaters had to bail (sad!), the Pneurotics have joined the bill at the last minute (hooray!). So if you were hemming and hawing about going to the gig, you've got no excuses now.

Local Musicians and Artists Release Video Series for Southern Rescue Trails

This fall, Chapel Hill band North Elementary will release a series of music videos directed by local artists in an effort to promote its upcoming release on 307 Knox Records, Southern Rescue Trails. Beginning August 3^rd, one video will premiere each week, with the series ending on September 28^th.

Each video will be the visual counterpart to a track on the new album, and will be released in the order in which they appear on the record. The array of artists North Elementary’s John Harrison recruited for this project includes amateurs and professionals, as well as local musicians. Jews and Catholics - Who Are? We Think We Are! (CD, 307 Knox, Pop)
The controversially-named Jews and Catholics is the Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based duo comprised of Alanna Meltzer and Eddie Garcia. The humorously titled Who Are? We Think We Are! was recorded in 2009 by Mitch Easter and Cheetie Kumar. This band made the wise choice to start off with a bang. "Dear Alexa" is the obvious standout track here, and a song that absolutely commands attention. This duo's sound is characterized by Garcia's standup bass and Meltzer's fuzzy distorted guitars. These musicians are treading on that fine line that separates rock from pop. The songs are melodic and easy to follow...but more often than not they have a rather forceful sound. Other tracks that grab our attention are "Who Are We Think We Are," "Up For Days," and "Thank God I Don't Live In Your Eyes." Good solid underground pop/rock stuff.

Tom Tom Magazine, a portal dedicated to female drummers, did an interview with Trophy Wife's Katy Otto.

A snippet of the interview:

KO: Mindy asked me to speak about the philosophy behind my band Trophy Wife, formed when Diane and I met and lived in Washington, DC. I was tired of the conventional models for bands and with a lot of the patterns within which bands operated. I remember being so compelled by the Nirvana lyric “our little group has always been and always will until the end.” At one point, Cobain used “tribe” instead of “group.” That stuck with me – this notion that bands could be more than just their music and aesthetic, but could create a culture and a relationship that others could derive energy from. Diane doesn’t remember it, but I saw her play guitar once and knew I wanted to play with her. She had interesting note and chord choices, interesting style, and innovation. It was useful to our dialectic that it was her first band and that I had gone through a rote of intra band dynamics. I liked how often we could practice as a duo. The name Trophy Wife basically for me was a smirk at the concept in general of women in a detached, object role. I want a world of women and girls as subjects. And subjecthood, with all its painful trappings, pitfalls, and machinations, is exactly why we do this band. It IS more than just a band to us. When we lived apart, it was a way to keep our dialogue going. We have intense, and sometimes jarring, important conversations to try to make sense of the world. This band is the most personal music I have ever made. We write lyrics together, in practice – no matter how long it takes – and describe the reasons why we opted to write lyrics to each other. I have never had that degree of transparency with another person before.

The music is heavy and loud and gives us permission to say the things that are hard to say. It needs to be. I don’t think there is any separation between Diane and me and that music. It is our embodiment of our friendship and desire to consistently be in dialogue with one another. At some point touring last year, we made the decision to only play shows facing each other, because it was the best way to enact that energy. We have parts of our songs that really can only work if we are making eye contact and fully engaged. Otherwise, I do not think we pull of what we are trying to do. We are putting out a new record, our first full length, on 307 Knox this summer called Patience Fury. They are two words, but in the case of our album, they are a compound thought. They need one another.

That is a lot of what Trophy Wife is about. Recording this album with our friend Devin Ocampo (Medications, Faraquet, Smart Went Crazy) was an emotional process, and he was a fantastic midwife in it. We want to stretch our limits with this band. I am excited that we will tour a great deal in the upcoming months. We are also writing a host of new songs. Sometimes, to do this, we have to draw, or use a whiteboard. Every set of lyrics remains in an ongoing discussion. We are both process-oriented people, so I think this is a good space and culture we have established for ourselves. Additionally, we have lyrics in French, and now German, to reflect our ancestry, and because sometimes English just isn’t enough. We have a few new efforts in the works, including doing some self education together with some free online music and sound related classes that MIT offers (so amazing, 1900 classes FREE online). We also have some ideas in the works for a blog with music created at the intersection of song and literary works that inspire artists. We make music to survive and to tell our version of a story.

Our LP/CD will come with a download card that can be planted will grow into flowers. This is exciting to us -we want to write songs that seed. We also want to hear from people interested in any of the ideas we put out and welcome communication.

Hi,

Thanks for all the support this weekend. We had a great time. We tested out the stage and solid state amps need to be secured, rain will go away, beer is always good, Only Burger is also very good, vinyl records seem to make everyone happy and loud rock is better when it is, well, louder.

We are planning for at least one or two more summer stage shows in the parking lot so stay tuned.

In between the sets if you were paying attention we played the new Gray Young and North Elementary records. Just saying.

Birds and Arrows-Pride of Lions, new single 7"

Hi,

Friday we will be celebrating the release of a new split 7" inch--Birds and Arrows/Billy Sugarfix's Carousel. This limited run mixed vinyl 7" inch will be
available at the show. The show is at 618 Foster Street @ 6:30 pm on Friday July 16th.
The covers for this 7" inch were handmade from old wallpaper. There is a digital download card inside. Really all you need for a wonderful collectible record!

The music will be outside. Schooner will also be playing as they kick off the event.

The show is free, all ages and will be lots of fun.

Birds & Arrows and Billy Sugarfix Split 7" Release (and Show)!

Exciting news!

On July 16th, local darlings Birds & Arrows and Billy Sugarfix will be celebrating the release of a new split 7". To kick off this exciting new project with a bang, the two acts will play a show at the 307 Knox space at 618 Foster St. in Durham, and knowing these folks, it's sure to be a blast. The show will be taking place as part of Durham's 3rd Friday (as if you needed another reason to show up).

Also, the vinyl is a limited edition run of 500 copies in mixed-color vinyl, so buy one while you can. The jackets (pictured above) are screened on old wallpaper samples. Plus, there's a free download code inside.

Mark your calendars, bring your friends and break in your dancing shoes! We'll see you there.
