Unchain your dogs!

Mel and I are both pretty big animal lovers. One organization that we're both pretty big fans of is the Coalition to Unchain Dogs. Their mission is threefold:
  1. Raise money and build fences for chained dogs in the community

  2. Provide support to and educate the community as to why chaining is cruel and dangerous and raise awareness of the physical, mental and emotional needs of dogs

  3. Advocate for the passing of laws that disallow or severely restrict the chaining of dogs
I hear you saying, but what on earth does this have to do with music? Every year, they do an awesome concert to raise funds for the organization. This year, Music for Fences is being headlined by Superchunk.

What: Music for Fences Fundraiser
Who: Superchunk, Regina Hexaphone, The Kinksmen, Rey Norteño
When: August 29th @ 4:30pm
Where: Durham Central Park
Cost: $8 advance/$10 day at the door
Other Activities: Coloring contest for kids

Wigg at Shakori!!!!!!

Go see The Wigg Report at Shakori Hills, Sat Aug 29 for an all-day music festival and benefit for Woods Charter School.
They need a new bus, and you can help!

Triangle News: Franklin Street Comes Alive!

I'm pretty much just gonna copypasta the press release:

The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and The Mayor's Office have initiated a special 6-week pilot program called, Franklin Street Comes Alive! to bring local musicians and performers to Franklin Street to play in designated outdoor areas.

Musicians will be performing on Friday and Saturday nights from 7:00 to 10:00 pm beginning at the end of July 2009.

Our goal for Franklin Street Comes Alive! is to support downtown business by marketing downtown as a thriving cultural destination. We also hope to nurture and expand Chapel Hill's cultural assets by supporting local musicians.

Musicians are welcome to apply to Franklin Street Comes Alive! Earn some money and promote upcoming shows while playing for a broad audience on the street. The program will pay each act $50 in addition to tips earned. Fill out the simple application to be considered to play.

Show: The Wigg Report (Like Blammo Fast!)

Hi Folks,

Posting this update from The Wigg Report:

"We are back from our Guerilla battery powered parking lot and sidewalk tour. We had a great time and were only shut down and asked to leave once because more people were in the parking lot of the club, watching and listening to us play, than were in the club itself. Good times!"

"The Wigg Report will be in Greensboro NC july 30th @ the green burro, part of the Dotmatrix project.
September 6, we will be opening up for the Paperhand Puppet Intervention Annual Festival at Forest theater in Chapel hill nc paperhandpuppets.org. Their works were part of the movie "Across the Universe" very cool stuff."

thanks
Wigg

Press: Future Islands

The Future Islands are not only completely awesome artists, they are also really fabulous people. So when people you work with (Dan Deacon/Future Islands 7in), start busting out all over the place, you can't help but be extremely pleased.

Rolling Stone's blog, the Rock&Roll Daily, think you should be keeping your eye on the Future Island, and we couldn't agree with them more.

They have a ton of amazing projects coming up, including a vinyl release of 'Wave Like Home' we're jointly releasing with German label Altin Village.

Earlier this summer, part of our neighborhood landscape was vandalized. The head of a popular bronto statue was stolen. The rehab has already begun, and Bull City Rising has a nice write-up about that.

Save the Bronto! is fundraising to help restore our beloved Bronto. The tee-shirts have arrived, and will be available at:
Durham Farmers’ Market (craft side): Saturday July 18th, from 8 to noon
Elmo’s Diner: Sunday July 19th, from 8 to noon

Tour: Jews and Catholics

The dymanic duo Jews and Catholics (facebook , myspace, reverbnation) are getting ready to hit the road for the next few weeks. Check for your town and mark your calenders!

Jews and Catholics are a Winston-Salem, NC-based duo comprised of upright bassist Alanna Meltzer and guitarist/vocalist/sequencist Eddie Garcia. Their combined elements of razor sharp rhythms, bowed bass, fuzzy guitar, and haunting vocals create an eerie density, a sound that wraps itself around the listener’s head and doesn’t let go. Their songs buzz with electric energy and intensity marked by commanding vocals and sharp musical shifts. Meltzer’s decade spent in orchestras and Garcia’s 15 years of rock band experience have shaped them into professional and dynamic songwriters and performers.

Humble Tripe: Fundraising!

Humble Tripe is in the middle of a fundraising push to start recording their new album. Click here to donate!

In their own words:

Dear Friends and Families,

This month, Humble Tripe is officially five months old! July also marks the 31st birthday of song leader supreme Shawn Luby, and the month that Humble Tripe will be hitting the studios to record our first full length album!!!!!

Our story began last year when Shawn flew all the way to Boston to living room record a few songs with stringed instrument god, Stud Green. After 4 days of box taped mic stands and loose tea shakers, Shawn returned to Durham solo and realized, "oh crap I need a band...how cool!" Grand things began to happen when Shawn joined up with good friend and drummer Melissa York, (of Team Dresch, The Butchies, and Ex-Members fame). Stud flew to Durham one show at a time, and together they formed a pretty cool classical/folk/americana/punk trifecta!

Then something even more magical happened, and the threesome turned to 5 in a quick minute. First, ex-Texas first chair trumpeteer Kadji Amin picked up her horn and mastered the harmonica. Then dancing friend Jess Shell morphed into a bell-whacking, symbol-crashing, tambourine-smashing thumb harpist. Smack in the middle of Durham NC, Humble Tripe was born.

This year has been awesome for us. First, we joined up with local label 307 Knox Records, determined to get our music out! We have also had the great pleasure of sharing the stage with celebrated queer artists Katastrophe, Athens Boys Choir, and the Butchies (reunion show). We rocked out, Springsteen style, at a Ukulele Challenge, got twittered about by Justin Bond at Mondo Homo 2009 (Atlanta), and shared a show with the French Goth legend, Veronique Diabolique. And in crazy exciting news, we are opening for Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls in Chapel Hill this August 15th!!!It has been a great year for new friends and new music, and we look forward to sharing our CD with all of you.

Here's where you come in. We have been saving every dime from our shows, and are on our way to our goal of raising the $3500 it will cost us to record our first album. We are extremely excited to finally be able to offer our fans CDs to take home with them, and are hoping that our friends and fans can help us reach our goal. In return for a small donation toward our album, we will mail you our newly designed Humble Tripe pins and stickers, sealed with a kiss. To folks who can do $25 or more, we'll send all of the above along with a CD and a handwritten love letter from the tripe(s) of your choice!

Once we're done recording, we'll hit the road, so we'll be looking for gig halls, back porches, and hammocks to sleep in. Let us know if you'd like us to play in your local music venue, music festival, or event, bring out your friends, and we can promise you a great time! If you live near us, come to our local shows, and bring your friends. We have upcoming shows at the Cave in Chapel Hill on July 12th, Broad Street Cafe on July 23rd, and the Cat's Cradle on August 15th. Hope to see you there!!!

Thanks so much for your help. We can't wait to share the music and send you stickers!

Love,
Shawn, Stud, Mel, Kadji, and Jess. Humble Tripe loves you all.

Review: Katastrophe

The header from San Francisco's Wiretap Music, where Katastrophe is a 'featured band':

"Full of passion, anxiety and honesty, the iconic wordsmith’s music has often been described as “emo-hop.” It’s a hybrid sound mixing old school hip-hop with new and underground styles, thickly layered beats and some real poppy hits. There is a clear musicality there, as well—maybe that’s some of the emo influence, maybe Katastrophe is just a genre-fucking musical genius, maybe both."

Yes it is exciting!

Hi,

In about two weeks we will have The Worst Amazing, Katastrophe's new record back from the manufacturing plant. Yes, two little weeks!

While we wait we are working on getting all of our ducks in a row for his Team Clermont project. Did you know you had to write out all the lyrics to the record for press? I guess I did but I never really thought about it when I was looking at the 17 item song list.

CD release you say....October, yep. So many more details on that to come. Partly because he is on the west coast and we are here in Durham. Either way it will be an event to remember.

Stay tuned.....

MT

p.s. we are also working with Altin Village based in Dresden Germany to put out Future Island's Wave Like Home on vinyl. I got the art work and master from William now we just need to put it all together and ship it off.
